PR Rock Head Award: Sputtering engine

Events designed to gain media attention for a new product or service are not new.  But, as Lada Granta knows too well, these media events work better when things go as planned.

Lada Granta makes what may be Europe’s cheapest car, starting at $7,800.  The Russian auto company wanted to get some attention for its latest model and invited Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to tour their plant and take the car for a test drive.

The only problem was they forgot to tell Putin the trick to starting the car.  It took the Prime Minister six tries to get the car started.  The company needed to explain that the car is equipped with an electronic e-gas pedal.

Lada Granta, who receives today’s PR Rock Head Award, got more attention than they planned for their new car.  The GP Spin wonders what happened to the person who forgot to tell Putin how to start the car.
